Trading is 80% Mind Game! Its all in the Mind!
It is the left brain that does the analytical problem solving thinking. It constantly searches for problems. While it may be an excellent tool for a primitive human to stay alive and modern one to remain safe it is particularly detrimental to a trader's Trading Performance. In trading there are no problems. But every time you take a trade or see a Setup the lefty starts analysing the situation and comes up with a bundle of problems. The survival mode kicks in. For more details read my article on Fear and Greed.
To tame down this beast down I present to you a technique called Morning Pages. It was first introduced to the Trading Community by Dr. Bill Williams when he presented it in his book Trading Chaos - New Trading Dimensions. He learned it from its founder, a writer called Julia Cameroon.
The Morning Pages are the primary tool Julia Cameron engages to move through creative blocks, or to discover our inner creativity and passions. Morning Pages are three hand-written, stream-of-consciousness pages you write every morning as soon as you wake up (before you do anything else). Write them in a notebook or journal so you can have them all in one place. I have been doing morning pages for over a year now and its been fantastic.
Morning Pages are a creative unblocking tool created by writing and creativity coach, Julia Cameron. And if you do them consistently, you’re guaranteed to see some fantastic results.
What Are Morning Pages?
How To Do Morning Pages
Morning Pages are simple:
Before you go to sleep, place a notebook and pen by your bed.
When you wake up in the morning, sit up, grab your notebook and immediately write 3 stream-of-consciousness pages. Let the words pour onto the page, passing no judgment on what you’re writing, how well you’re writing it or if it even makes any sense.
When you’re finished, close your notebook, put it back where you got it and go on with your day.
Three easy steps that will get you started on the right foot every morning.
You can write about absolutely anything. Whatever pops in your head, write it down. Complain about your job or your kids or yourself. Talk about your dreams, your ambitions, your passions. Mention your hobbies or health goals. Anything goes.
You’ll even find things pop up that you never expected.
For example, one morning I was complaining in my Morning Pages about feeling bored and anxious all the time. Then I realized it’s because I hadn’t been exercising lately. Writing Morning Pages helped me to identify something I didn’t even know was bothering me.
Benefits of Morning Pages
There have been so many amazing benefits reported by traders and others who use Morning Pages. Some of the most common include:
Clarity–Your mind will feel less clouded and a lot clearer.
Focus–You’ll have more focus when it comes to your writing.
Less negativity, less complaining–Since you’re complaining to your Morning Pages, you’ll find you complain less and be less negative in your daily life. Complaining on the page helps you keep it there.
You’ll start taking action–As you talk about things you want to accomplish, you’ll start to take action in your life. You’ll find opportunities are popping up in places you never expected. The more you talk to your Morning Pages about it, the more you’ll want to make it happen.
Problem-solving–You’ll tell your Pages about a problem you’re having one day, and a few days later, a solution will come up. That’s the power of Morning Pages. They tap into your subconscious mind.
Increased creativity–Your creativity will begin to flourish. You’ll have more ideas than you ever imagined. You’ll feel like a better writer every time you sit down to put words on paper.
Unblocked–If you’ve been experiencing a creative “block” of some kind, Morning Pages will help unblock you. You’ll feel creative again in no time.
More ideas flowing in–You’ll have so many ideas coming to you, you won’t know what to do with them all. The more you write your pages, the more you signal to the Universe that you’re open to change and to ideas. And that in itself will attract more ideas to you.
Have you ever attempted Morning Pages? What was your experience like?
You sit down first thing in the morning and you write 3 pages about anything and everything. Much of our day is spent with a constant stream of anxieties, to-do lists, and replays of yesterday's activities. When we take the time to sit down and put the swirling chaos of thoughts down on paper, we free our minds up for what is really important to us. Yesterday's irritation at your friend - it's thought through, down on paper, and off your mind. By channeling these thoughts out on paper, we free up so much more space for intuition and creativity.
The Morning Pages assist with more than cleaning house in the mind. The less of the clutter we have to write more, the more we begin to write about what is important, what stirs our passions, what our goals are, and helps clarify our direction for the future. The Morning Pages are the way to clear the traffic off the free way to DRIVE.
